Rooted Reflections: Why We Built Bloom Social
Welcome to the first entry in our new blog series, Rooted Reflections! In this series, we’ll discuss ethical technology, our mission and the work we’re doing to support community, and so much more. This week, we’ll begin with the basics: why we’re building a social media platform.
We live in an era where social media is everywhere, but connection feels harder to come by. Algorithms get us outraged, platforms collect and sell our personal data, and time spent online often feels less like community-building and more like emotional drainage. Social media companies lost their way at some point, and we went from creators to users.
That’s why we built Bloom Social.
Bloom is more than a platform. It’s a reimagining of what social media could be: one rooted in values and a creator-focused approach. Built and operated by nenos, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Bloom isn’t designed to maximize ad revenue or track your every click. Instead, our intention is to help people reconnect with what matters most: their communities, their voices, and each other.
We call it “social media that gets you off social media.” It’s a platform that encourages you to explore beyond your feed—discovering local events, joining movements, lifting up neighbors, and stepping into spaces where real connection can bloom.
We built Bloom Social because we believe in forward-thinking, ethical, and community-focused technology. We believe that your data shouldn’t be for sale, your attention shouldn’t be exploited, and your experience online should make your life better, not emptier. That seems like a pretty radical idea in today’s tech landscape… but it shouldn’t be.
Bloom Social is our attempt at getting back to the roots of what social media once was. We’re a nonprofit building social media in a way that prioritizes people over profit. No ads. No algorithms you can’t control. No shareholders to impress. Just a growing movement of creators, neighbors, and global changemakers shaping something better—together.
