2.5 Distribution of Private Information

You are prohibited from sharing, or threatening to share, others information that is considered personal, such as a physical address or telephone number. You must obtain prior express permission that permits you to share this information.

We do not prohibit the distribution of media sources or journalistic reports regarding the release of private information. We also do not prohibit individuals from consensually sharing their own private information. Generally, information that we do not classify as personal includes full names, birth dates, generalized locations (such as state or country), place of employment, and education history.

We do not consider rumors or gossip as personal information, provided that it does not violate any other community standard. We also do not consider personal conversations (such as e-mails, text messages, and direct messages) as private information, as long as at least one member of that conversation consents to the distribution or publishing of the conversation.

Content that would violate this standard would include, but is not limited to:

  • The unapproved distribution of private information, including financial information (such as their credit score or card numbers), physical addresses, identification documents (such as a driver's license, Social Security Number, or other government-issued card), non-public contact information, and traditionally private information (such as medical records)

  • Attempting to solicit, sell, or trade, or threatening to release, expose, or access the private information of an individual, organization, business, political party, government agency or institution, or political campaign for the purposes of bribery, blackmail, or to damage their credibility or reputation
