Why nenos is now a nonprofit organization

At nenos, we've always believed in the power of community, and today, we're thrilled to share a transformative chapter in our story. We're excited to announce our transition from a for-profit entity to a nonprofit organization. Beginning today, nenos LLC is now nenos Inc. This evolution reflects our unwavering commitment to our users, community values, and a mission that goes beyond profits.

Yesterday, our 13-member inaugural Board of Directors met and formally approved this transition. We’ve also applied to receive 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, and expect to hear a decision mid-2024. You can learn more about our Board on our governance page.

Heydi Barro, newly elected Chairwoman of the Board of Directors, shared that "in the world of social media, nenos is not just creating connections but also weaving a tapestry of social change. We’re building bridges that unite hearts and minds.”

During the meeting, the Board of Directors appointed Matthew Chernesky as nenos’ Chief Executive Officer, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization. Samuel Spencer was formally offered the position of Chief Technology and Development Officer, with a primary objective of spearheading the technological development of the nenos app in pursuit of our mission and vision.

Our decision to become a nonprofit is rooted in a deep-held belief in community empowerment. As a for-profit, we saw the potential for a more significant positive impact by aligning our goals with the principles of a nonprofit. Unlike all of the other typical social media networks, this shift allows us to focus solely on serving you — our incredible community — without the distractions that come with profit-centric models.

Your data, content, and contributions to the platform will never be sold for profit. Our priority will always be for our content creators, rather than investors or shareholders. Through the support of our generous donors, sponsorships, and grants, we are building an ad-free sanctuary, free from algorithms that seek to exploit.

This transition doesn't just represent a change in our legal status; it's a pledge to enhance your nenos experience. As a nonprofit, our foremost dedication is to you — our users, content creators, and advocates. We're excited to explore new avenues that empower local voices, drive positive change, and foster connections that matter.

One key aspect of our transformation is an unwavering commitment to transparency. We'll continue to keep you in the loop, sharing updates, decisions, and our progress as we grow together. Our community is at the core of nenos, and your trust and support mean everything to us.

How can you support our mission for positive, forward-thinking social media?

Our commitment to being a space where local voices thrive and shape positive change remains at the forefront. We're embracing this change wholeheartedly, and we can't wait to embark on this next chapter with you.

Thank you for being an integral part of the nenos community. Your support has brought us to this moment, and we're eager to continue this journey together.
