Halfway To Starting Something New

We’re about halfway through autumn, halfway along in our crowdfunding campaign, and a little less than halfway to our first alpha release. We wanted to share some exciting developments and reflect on where we’re at in the process of creating a new social media platform!

Partnering with Creators

We are in the process of collaborating and partnering with content creators to focus on the work they are producing, including fashion designers, artists, and musicians. We want this to underline our emphasis on nenos as a connecting platform for creators and their local communities. These partnerships will allow creators to have early access to the platform to begin highlighting their content, and you’ll periodically see them introduced through nenos marketing, our mock-ups, and development updates.

If you’re a content creator interested in partnering with nenos, drop us a line at hello@nenos.one or click that “I’m a Creator” button and we’ll get back to you pronto!

Updates on the Product

We’re working hard to ensure that nenos is a deliverable product for our early access content creators (with an estimated time in December 2020). As a reminder, this product will be in its Alpha Stage -- meaning that it’s features and reach will be limited and there’ll likely be bugs. This is totally normal for software development. As we continue, the product will only get better. Giving early access during Alpha will also give our content creators a first-look experience and the ability to create on the platform before anyone else, while also providing us useful feedback and suggestions for improvement.

As the prototype continues to evolve, you should expect more exciting mock-ups and previews available on our Indiegogo campaign and here, on our website.

Reflecting on Current Events

We are continuously observing the market, which helps us identify the strengths and weaknesses of platforms and what makes people happy. The role of moderation, privacy, and how aggressively platforms should discourage conspiracy theories and radical content is at the forefront of our national discourse (considering social media’s role in the 2016 election and its yet unclear role in 2020).

There are two ends of the spectrum: on one end, you can have a platform that heavily and inconsistently censors and moderates content. On the other, you can have a platform that completely ignores the content, which fosters radicalism and behavior that can have tragic real-world implications. We’re not entirely happy with either style — as we’re sure you aren’t either. That’s why we’re building nenos: because we all deserve better from social media.

We are currently creating a detail-specific public guideline on how we’ll moderate content, because we believe that it is important for our content creators to understand the parameters of what is permissible. We want to foster an atmosphere where folks feel comfortable sharing their views and content, while at the same time we can ensure that the platform is not being abused or misused to promote nonfactual conspiracies or harbor dangerous beliefs.

In fact, if you’re a researcher or journalist, we’d love to hear from you and get your thoughts and feedback about social media. We want to get this right. You can send us an email at hello@nenos.one or click the button to contact us.

A key feature of nenos that will allow it to stand above its competitors is its heavy reliance on community-oriented discussions for our content creators. This naturally will reduce the virality of content and ensure that the content being shared and promoted is truly valued by, and relevant for, our content creators.

Next Steps

Over the next few weeks, we plan on focusing on and eventually finishing up our Indiegogo fundraiser. After that, we’ll be in a solid position to prepare launching our Alpha version of the application -- and another update will be published prior to the completion of the fundraiser. Eligible contributors will be notified when they’re able to login and create their accounts!

Thank you for your support so far, and we look forward to speaking with you again soon!
