Why we’re creating our ethics and advisory boards
When we first thought of the idea of nenos, we wanted to build a new social media platform that would challenge standard norms: we would abandon aggressive algorithms, dramatically reel back the amount of data collected, and prohibit sponsored corporate advertising. We aim to be a positive alternative to traditional social media, but we can’t do this alone.
In response, we have formed a Social Media Ethics Board and an Advisory Board to help support our work toward these goals in community-driven forums, composed of different perspectives, backgrounds, and professions.
The Social Media Ethics Board will be responsible for helping guide our community standards and moderation policies, and ensuring that our business practices align with our ethical values. We want to walk the walk and talk the talk, as there are far too many companies out there that preach about ethics while undermining their content creators.
Meanwhile, our Advisory Board will act as a more informal board of directors: a group of volunteers with experience in fundraising, community building, technology, and leadership to guide nenos financially, operationally, and technologically toward our goals. While these individuals are not investors and do not have voting powers, they are equally as critically important to helping us construct an effective path forward.
Every board member will serve an initial term of one (1) year and in October 2023 may be eligible for a full two (2) year term after the completion of their inaugural term. Both boards will meet twice virtually per year—one meeting in the winter and one in the summer—to conduct business. Moving forward, the composition of either board may change (e.g. additional members) and responsibilities may shift to reflect the evolution of our business and platform.
We believe that it is absolutely essential that all of the work we do is intentional, transformative, and aligns with our mission and vision. These boards play key roles in the formation of our company and the platform itself, and will hold us accountable to building that positive alternative to traditional social media.
Over the next two weeks, we will be releasing the names and short bios of who sits on each board—and we’re so excited to share more information about these incredible community leaders with you! Once all board members have been publicly announced, you’ll be able to visit a dedicated Governance page with more information on the boards (such as their bylaws and composition).
